Hi everyone! Hinotan is away again settling a debate in our countries capital about interstellar space objects, so he asked me to fill in for him again. I'll be your substitute teacher again, so feel free to ask me any questions about art or whatever is on your mind.~

Any advice for getting back into a creative mood when you've lost it?

It's shame they never do any new works, though. Or at the rate of 1 new set every 2 years..which sucks."

So far the biggest problem I've had going from photoshop to gimp has been the fucking translation tools.

Photoshop has a singular translate tool that handles scale, rotation, skew, flip, and movement.

Gimp has broken all of these into less usable stand alone tools, and it's fucking awful every time you need to work with them.

That aside it's not that terrible.

I used Firealpaca for a while. I think its brushes aren't diverse enough. Only five types: Pen, Airbrush, Watercolor, Eraser, and Blur. And nothing can top gimp's smudge tool.

<This was done nearly entirely with the smudge tool in gimp 2.3, nearly two years ago.

I've been using SAI for the last year, and I like the way the brushes are handled much better. No smudge tool though.

Commisan's color scheme changed for these ask threads because it was easier to color all in brown skin tone, then red, and then go back and fill in white highlights. It just looks nicer on a 3-color composition when I started.

However Commisan was "born" with dark hair. It's neither inappropriate to color her hair black or red. Her favorite colors also falls into the red color spectrum.

It's why Bandara is yellow, and I'm blue; how we looks depends on our composition.

If it helps, think about it like classic NES video games, where the art looks drastically different than the character sprite's colors. Limited palettes were used very often back then. (Thankfully we live in a comic instead.)

(I'm sorry about all the confusion. But perhaps I should explain another tip on character design and perhaps a Principle of Art. I should have explained this earlier since it made sense to me as an artist myself, but not to new students.

When designing characters, I used similar characteristics found throughout the primary 3 characters. Hinotan has Commisan and Bandara's hair, and Commisan and Bandara wear similar clothing to Hinotan vice versa.

One of the 8 principles of art is Harmony, or when all characteristics work in unison. Originally when Hinotan was designed many years ago he was male, but for the purpose of this art thread exercise we'll say Hinotan is female like Commisan and Bandara. But being female sex doesn't equate to female gender. Hinotan [and many other friends I know] identify with more masculine characteristics.

So to keep in harmony, Hinotan will be female along with the other 2 primary color characters. I was planning to devote at least 1 more ask thread to each character to further develop them.)

The act of sex itself can be done artistically, but for matters of "porn" whose purpose is to achieve orgasm, a more straight forward approach might be necessary.

For example, you can make a very abstract cubistic depiction of sex, but people are probably more inclined to masturbate to a more realistic shaped and colored depiction of the body. My portraits are pretty straight forward in that sense. I hope I answered your question. ^^)

>>2945365 (Art isn't just about how strong the emotions it elicits, but which emotions as well. So to say a stronger piece of work is more artistic would be a fallacy of composition, because what works for one doesn't work for all.

For example some pornographic works make cause feelings of disgust, some may cause feelings of desire, and some may even cause romance; these feelings may or may not be mutual. It is true that how hard they make one feel maybe "more artistic", but one picture may evoke more response in one person than another.

You may have been on an art website and saw some images that caused you confusion or anger even. They may have caused a different response in someone else who understands the image and may have conflicting thoughts with you about the artistic merit regarding the image.

I suppose that it all just depends! "laughs"

There are techniques I consider that help an image gain more merit; sometimes I find art whose subject I don't like, but I find artistically pleasing and successful. Over the next few days I plan to go over the Principles of Art to help better explain some strategies that can be used to make art successful.)

Looking up references, knowing anatomy, coloring techniques... It can take years to reach maturity and still there is more to learn, so I think it's important to start now and hit rough spots to learn from your mistakes early on.

Like any skill, it takes time and practice. But I'm still happy you tried. I think perseverance and patience is a very difficult trait to maintain. Starting small is just the first step to taking bigger steps.

I'm actually trying to start painting my own backgrounds, and I'm clearly not where I want to be with that. So I'm starting now and trying to develop that. The picture I posted is related; painted the background myself with reference. )

They have to be to dislocate their jaws to eat fish. If you look carefully, sometimes you can even see through their pale, fleshy skin to see their internal organs.

Although it is quite keen and aggressive, they don't appear too interested in Kemonobito like us. They live quite solitary lives avoiding social situations. It's a wonder they even manage to reproduce; the females are always salivating a bitter-sweet red liquid to attract prey and mates... before fatally consuming them alive.

Like most apex predators, there is very few competition between themselves, and their gene pool is quite small. I'm currently thinking of ways to balance out the ecosystem, as they play a crucial part in maintaining foliage eating fish at the bottom of the sea.]
