Hi everyone! Hinotan is away again settling a debate in our countries capital about interstellar space objects, so he asked me to fill in for him again. I'll be your substitute teacher again, so feel free to ask me any questions about art or whatever is on your mind.~
I'll respond as fast as I can in MS_Paint.

I look forward to getting to know all of you, so let's have fun and work on art!

hi commisan,

just wanted to say that I like the new 4-color scheme. Looks good! Hope to see it used more in this thread.

Any advice for getting back into a creative mood when you've lost it?

Been working on a few things I like/want done.. but lately sitting down to work on them just results in browsing the internet or something.

Pic related, it's the practice piece I've been repeatedly stalling on.

Since you were inspired by Dr.comet, I proposed this question in the last thread, but since it's vanishing:

"Also comet has always been my favorite artist, so it's awesome to know his stuff has been inspirational to you, Comimisan. Which of his images is your favorite? if you have one?

It's shame they never do any new works, though. Or at the rate of 1 new set every 2 years..which sucks."

Is it worth trying to pirate photoshop, or should I just focus my efforts on learning how to use gimp?

File: Transcraptools.PNG - (44.68 KB, 411x193) Thumbnail displayed, click image for full size.

So far the biggest problem I've had going from photoshop to gimp has been the fucking translation tools.

Photoshop has a singular translate tool that handles scale, rotation, skew, flip, and movement.

Gimp has broken all of these into less usable stand alone tools, and it's fucking awful every time you need to work with them.

That aside it's not that terrible.

If you're going to bother learning a new program in the first place, you may want to try Manga Studio 5. It's got some powerful tools and allows for some great brush creation. Damn near everything about the interface is customizable as well.

I was thinking Clip Studio Paint. thought Paint tool SAI is also a great alternative to GIMP since gimp is really a piece of shit.

Firealpaca is probably decent enough to draw with. And it's free.

PS isn't really made for drawing, and I wish the brushes were more interesting/flexible

File: cyber.PNG - (311.16 KB, 542x973) Thumbnail displayed, click image for full size.

I used Firealpaca for a while. I think its brushes aren't diverse enough. Only five types: Pen, Airbrush, Watercolor, Eraser, and Blur. And nothing can top gimp's smudge tool.

<This was done nearly entirely with the smudge tool in gimp 2.3, nearly two years ago.

I've been using SAI for the last year, and I like the way the brushes are handled much better. No smudge tool though.

Commisan wants to get out of the class, but where should she go?

A. Walk on the Beach
B. Walk in the Woods
C. Walk around Town

Hey Commisan. Have you ever considered giving up art for technology in your life?

File: Commisan48.png - (263.65 KB, 521x484) Thumbnail displayed, click image for full size.

>>2943360 (Sometimes I think about it. I feel like since I only learned about traditional art when I was younger I'd have relearn everything there is to know about digital art. Bandara has me beat there. In fact I was thinking of doing all my "asks" on paper, but then I realized I would have ran out first... traditional art is expensive, but I don't think I'll go digital just yet. There's so much even I haven't learned yet...

That was the question right?

We're almost to the place I wanted to show you the thing.)

No Commisan, that wasn't my question, but that kinda leads me into something: I received 2 weeks nonstop training in digital art techniques and it's pretty easy to pick up. Should you ever want to learn that, just find an instructor.

My question was that, have you ever thought that you could've been an engineer or a scientist instead of an artist? I made that decision in my life because I saw a better career in these fields and I haven't looked back at the people I left behind in the art class.

File: Commisan49.png - (175.24 KB, 520x484) Thumbnail displayed, click image for full size.

>>2943443 (Ah, I thought that's what you meant. Well when I was younger I believed you should pursue what makes you happy most... I thought if you fought for what you believe long enough you can overcome anything. I like art more than anything; if I could use it to help people, that would make me happy. But being a substitute part-time art teacher doesn't pay well. I'm more abstract minded than mathematical I think, so no I don't think I could have been an engineer or scientist even if I wanted to.

Bandara is an artist AND a scientist though; maybe you can ask her how she accomplished so much next time we get a chance.

The best thing I can tell you is find the most sustainable lifestyle where you can support yourself and your hobby. You don't want to live in a one room apartment like me for the rest of your life. I'm stuck!)

Why don't we try drawing some trees, together. That'll be super exciting! We can go home and get some lunch after that if you like.)
"No one is around. What will you do?"

A. Nice trees, Commisan!
B. Nice ass, Commisan!
C. "push Commisan in the water"

Commisan gazes out into the water, oblivious to the predatory creatures lurking just out of sight. One of them, a little green man with a wicked scar slashed across his face, draws a dull, rusty hatchet and draws closer to the unsuspecting Commisan. d20 + Wisdom + Perception to detect the approaching foe.

Commisan remains engrossed by the sight of the lovely blue water and skyscraper-like mountains, and remains completely unaware of the danger creeping up upon her. By the time she finally hears a twig snap behind her back, it's much too late. She turns just in time to spot a filthy little goblin. The grotesque creature lets out a screech like an iron spike grinding against flint and leaps at his victim, hacking his blade toward Commisan!

The goblin's attack is 7 vs. Commisan's AC.

Assuming she's about as dexterous as an average person, that would be an additional +0 to her armor class. Base armor class is 10, +0 Dex mod, +0 for equipment, for a total of 10 AC. In other words, the attack likely misses, since 7 is less than 10.)

Commisan's color scheme changed for these ask threads because it was easier to color all in brown skin tone, then red, and then go back and fill in white highlights. It just looks nicer on a 3-color composition when I started.

However Commisan was "born" with dark hair. It's neither inappropriate to color her hair black or red. Her favorite colors also falls into the red color spectrum.

It's why Bandara is yellow, and I'm blue; how we looks depends on our composition.

If it helps, think about it like classic NES video games, where the art looks drastically different than the character sprite's colors. Limited palettes were used very often back then. (Thankfully we live in a comic instead.)

Commisan, do you think lewd acts ( as in, not just the naked body, but actual sexual/teasing acts with someone else) can be drawn in an artistic light and seen as artistic? or do you just consider it raw passion/lust with no artsy merit?

I see and hear talk of "Artsy" porn, but it really just depends on the viewer, I suppose. Some will just call it porn, others see it as art. What say you?

(I'm sorry about all the confusion. But perhaps I should explain another tip on character design and perhaps a Principle of Art. I should have explained this earlier since it made sense to me as an artist myself, but not to new students.

When designing characters, I used similar characteristics found throughout the primary 3 characters. Hinotan has Commisan and Bandara's hair, and Commisan and Bandara wear similar clothing to Hinotan vice versa.

One of the 8 principles of art is Harmony, or when all characteristics work in unison. Originally when Hinotan was designed many years ago he was male, but for the purpose of this art thread exercise we'll say Hinotan is female like Commisan and Bandara. But being female sex doesn't equate to female gender. Hinotan [and many other friends I know] identify with more masculine characteristics.

So to keep in harmony, Hinotan will be female along with the other 2 primary color characters. I was planning to devote at least 1 more ask thread to each character to further develop them.)

>>2945171 (To me all art is real art, no matter the subject. Sex is just a different subject matter that depending on your society and time period, may or may not be accepted.

The act of sex itself can be done artistically, but for matters of "porn" whose purpose is to achieve orgasm, a more straight forward approach might be necessary.

For example, you can make a very abstract cubistic depiction of sex, but people are probably more inclined to masturbate to a more realistic shaped and colored depiction of the body. My portraits are pretty straight forward in that sense. I hope I answered your question. ^^)

>>2945365 (Art isn't just about how strong the emotions it elicits, but which emotions as well. So to say a stronger piece of work is more artistic would be a fallacy of composition, because what works for one doesn't work for all.

For example some pornographic works make cause feelings of disgust, some may cause feelings of desire, and some may even cause romance; these feelings may or may not be mutual. It is true that how hard they make one feel maybe "more artistic", but one picture may evoke more response in one person than another.

You may have been on an art website and saw some images that caused you confusion or anger even. They may have caused a different response in someone else who understands the image and may have conflicting thoughts with you about the artistic merit regarding the image.

I suppose that it all just depends! "laughs"

There are techniques I consider that help an image gain more merit; sometimes I find art whose subject I don't like, but I find artistically pleasing and successful. Over the next few days I plan to go over the Principles of Art to help better explain some strategies that can be used to make art successful.)

>>2946329 (I remind you of your old girlfriend? "laughs" I hope I'm not too similar, although I just want to be nice to everyone.

If your having trouble working on your project, you may need to schedule a little bit of time to work on. In psychology, [when it comes to work] we are often set at "Fixed Interval Reinforcement". Basically what it means is that when it comes time to work because of a deadline, we often put our work out at the very last minute. That can become a habit, and like any habit it takes time to resist and work against it over time.

I think anyone can change, [I'm optimistic] but change has to come from within yourself; never give up!)

Is it wrong that I have no artistic abilities, or particular interest in acquiring them, yet I still look eagerly forward to each update of this thread?

Commisan reminds me of the good parts of that ex, so no worries.

Well, the current project I'm working on has no deadline. I work on it like 5 mins at a time then go back to ignoring it for a week. The quality of the work only warrants like 2 hours of my time though.. yet I've been working on it for two weeks now :s

That creative mood just hasn't been around for it.

>>2946453 (Balance is an important principle in art because without it the eye and brain can have a hard time processing where to look next. But remember that symmetry and asymmetry are equally important! Symmetry is easier to process and attractive to look at, but asymmetry is usually more interesting and takes the brain a slightly longer time to process. Use both to your advantage! Here are some examples I pulled up:

Symmetry (find the line down the middle!)

Asymmetry (let your eyes find a path!)

Where should we go tonight? Are you hungry or would you rather do something fun? I'm out of ideas right now.)
Tell Commisan where to go. Fill in the blank.~
A. We should go to the ________ so we can _______!

To the zoo so we can study animal anatomy.

Do a figure drawing class

(The zoo is a great place to go at night! We can see all the crazy and interesting beasts you've probably haven't see before.~

And we can do a figure drawing class while we're there!
It sounds perfect.

I needed to change my clothes, but I'm ready to go out now. I'll take some supplies with me just in case; you never know!)

I've never been to a zoo, do they even let people in at night? Seems unlikely, but there are a lot of animals that are nocturnal. I could see a zoo offering some kind of nocturnal NVG tour. That'd be neat.

>>2947120 ( I thought we'd take the Maglev Train to get there since it's faster than walking. Our Zoo is at the edge of our city on the coastline, so it shouldn't take too long to get there.

Our zoos are probably a little different than your zoo. It's more like a museum zoo actually, so some exhibits appear at different times of day. It's all indoors and all the exhibits are located on different floors above and below the earth. We don't have a lot of space where we live, so all the animals on the inside live in different floors. It's easier to explain once you see it. I promise it'll be interesting!

I'm going to invite a friend to meet us when we get there. She really likes biology and things like that, so maybe she'd like to explain more about some of the beasts we see. I'm so excited!)

Sounds fun! I wonder if your friend is cute

She's going plaid!

Her eyes... they are so empty... almost like red circles drawn with nothing more than the outline...
Im unsure whether this is a compliment or not...

I knew it all along. You've got cybernetic enhancements that you've been hiding this whole time. What's your real objective here? Spill it!

>Zoo with a friend

inb4 wild sex detour with said friend at the zoo.

..not that I'm complaining

Actually, I think it'd be pretty tough to get one's freak on at a zoo, place is monitored almost everywhere.

>>2947156 (This is our "zoo". It's pretty big huh? All the exhibits are on the different floors, which are like big discs. We'll get a better look once we're inside.

I think it looks really big and romantic at night next to the ocean. Maybe because it's slightly phallic with the balls on top. Who knows!!!

I think I see my friend over by the doors. Let's go meet up! I'm starving!)

>>2947183 ( I tried coloring my eyes in, but I have a rule against creepy red irises, like in my OP photo. So I made an artistic omission; I'm trying to look my best but I guess I can't win. "laughs")

[B:] [Hello again, everyone. I hope I'm not intruding, but I heard you were all going to visit the "Zoo". I'll be joining along so that we don't get lost once we go inside. I spoke with security, so we should have clearance for at least a few of the floors.
We should have the place to ourselves. We'll be safe as long as your with me.

I've listed the exhibits that are opened and closed below.
Personally I recommend the A.Q. water deck. Deep sea creatures are best seen at night! Their lights are very lovely.

I bought you ice cream, Commisan. It's your favorite.~]
(C:) (Wow! Strawberry Red. No.40! You're too cool! Get it? Because it's ICE CREAM!?

Where should we go first, everyone? I want to see the protokemonos. They're more active this time of day... er night.)
Which floor exhibit should they go see? Choose 1

>>2947324 [B:] [Our oceans are filled with a plethora of creatures... some more violent than others. On our way down we might see a few that are known for their predatory natures, seduction, and otherwise voracious appetites.

Most of them are crustaceans, but there are several notable aquatic protokemono beasts that you might find interesting.

I'm sure you all didn't come here to see a bunch of minnows, so maybe we'll some true Darwinian "survival of the fittest" from these prime beasts. Those that live down here definitely must fight to pass on their genes, which is something I admire very much.

Wouldn't you agree, Commisan?

(C:) (Ugh... my ice cream is melting...

Oh right! Survival of the fittest? That's kinda like art, right? Those who create the best art will live on? I think that's right... right?

I think I'll just stick to drawing; I definitely want to draw one of those Sea Dragons. They're big and muscular. ~)
(I'll take the next few days to draw some of the foreign aquatic beast ecology porn; They'll look a lot better on paper than in MS_Paint. Keep an eye out!)

>>2947377 [B:] [Today we saw a Sea Siren. They are apex mammal-like predators that live down in the dark abyss of our oceans. They are quite tall; their skulls are nearly the size of a small desk. They have to be to dislocate their jaws to eat fish. If you look carefully, sometimes you can even see through their pale, fleshy skin to see their internal organs.

Although it is quite keen and aggressive, they don't appear too interested in Kemonobito like us. They live quite solitary lives avoiding social situations. It's a wonder they even manage to reproduce; the females are always salivating a bitter-sweet red liquid to attract prey and mates... before fatally consuming them alive.

Like most apex predators, there is very few competition between themselves, and their gene pool is quite small. I'm currently thinking of ways to balance out the ecosystem, as they play a crucial part in maintaining foliage eating fish at the bottom of the sea.]

OOh..very nice, especially the view.

>>2947970 (C:) (I drew one too using only a ballpoint pen! I think I made the arms a little big though, but I got a more detailed portrait of the face. It has serrated teeth to tear through skin and scales.

Some people think this animal is sexy because it has a similar body to us; I almost have to agree since the resemblance is uncanny. I think it's strange how it didn't continue evolving...)

>>2948131 (C:) (Hmm... I'm not sure how to feel about some of these. Kinda concept art-ish. Sea Dragons are passive-aggressive marine mammals that belong in the same order as sirens, but as a species are roughly half the size. Their skulls are large and boney, and they also share the something like fur along the neck area. I think it must relate to respiration somehow.

I wonder what I should draw next...)

Art of Commisan getting her freak on with one of said sea dragons, obviously.

..for science.

Looks intimidating. Considering its an efficient killer, it may be a good thing it hasn't evolved further, gain higher intelligence, and live among normal society. She'd probably take a bite out of you just because she's having a bad day.

>>She'd probably take a bite out of you just because she's having a bad day.

Sounds like a lot of human women.

It has a real Go Nagai vibe to it.

aww commisan! I love you and your threads, whenever im feeling down about my art your advice is very uplifting, thank you!

>>2948580 {A:} {Sounds like a good idea. I think I'll convince them to do something sexy along those lines.

I might see what happens before wrapping this up.}
>>2948750 {A:} {It's finals week for me and it appears this thread's intended purpose is waning. I like answering questions for Commisan, but I knew from the start people were going to either run out of questions or lose interest all together. I like how comics like Prequel started on user based decisions. It was fun having people sort of make decisions too, so at most I'll retain that since it worked the best of all the experiments the past 2 threads had to offer.

Commisan's personality seems concrete enough for me to progress so I'm probably gonna skip the formalities and just jump into any story related thing I have going next time. I know I'm dieing to get her out of my head.

My only discrepancy and self critique is that everything relied on 1 panel, but I'll need more panels to show more story. It's been really fun drawing everyday though, so I don't think it should be a big problem.}

I liked it, I just a bit to passive for such things I suppose.

I envy your drive and inspiration.
